Past, Present or looking forward to another Roaring Twenties?
It’s good to be back
I had some interesting pillow talk on my recent skiing vacation. A ‘what if’ question came up which took wings, and filled the conversation of two entire restaurant evenings out. What was that question? First, let me tell you about the pre-pillow talk.
Our New Year’s celebration was to be a great one. A girls-only affair, well girls were invited, and men were sure to follow or be dragged in, willing or otherwise. What I didn’t expect was that my ex (Betty, who doesn’t see herself as an ex and likes to just show up and claim me as she sees fit) arrived this time with a man. She would typically bring a girlfriend and not a boyfriend, (in her true style) and always with the purpose of making me jealous. This time it worked.
I flew solo on the last skiing trip my sister organized for us and ended up sharing my ex’s vacation date. This time I was very much with my girlfriend, Jane. Jane and I are getting serious and have been inseparable. A short time ago Betty turned up at my home and her, and Jane almost came to blows. I thought this event had put an end to her ways. She’d brought a stranger along and was assuming she was going to bring him to my bed. The only man for me now is my boyfriend Hugo, and he wasn’t due to be with us until January, 3. Her date was good-looking enough to get the attention of the female-only holiday chalet, but I wasn’t interested and nor was Jane. She stepped in to sort the problem out. As a former British army officer, she’s used to dealing with men, mostly under her command. Some were willing, some took orders grudgingly, so she’d seen most of them in her time. Jane and I shared Hugo, and Betty on occasions too. I don’t want to come across as having double standards, but it had never been part of our thing with Betty and me. In fact, it was one of the reasons we broke up, with her bringing home strangers she’d meet when she was out gigging.
So, her date, let’s call him Brad. He was tall, blond, and a little unshaven. A Swedish pole vaulter with the body to match. I noticed my friends around me sizing him up for the jump. So, Jane took Brad out for a beer and a chat, leaving me with Betty.
She didn’t get it that I wasn’t into Brad and whined as I told her there was no way in hell he was coming in my bed. Hugo wouldn’t like me having sex with someone he didn’t know, and I kinda love the fact that he’s the only man for me now. So, I told her no and he wasn’t welcome to stay and no room for him. She could leave too if she didn’t like my rules. She flipped and turns into the person I both hate and some how love. I regretted letting Jane go out and leaving me alone with her. She asked to see my room as she needed to use the bathroom. As soon as we got there, she forced me down on the bed. I’m strong enough to take care of myself, but something releases when Betty comes on to me in this way. She was always the one in charge when we were together, and so it has remained. She told me she was staying, and I asked about Brad. She slapped me across the face, not hard, but enough for me to know what would come next if I didn’t give in to her. My relationship with Jane is the complete opposite, where I am on top, yet Jane reigns power over Betty. A weird idiosyncratic touch to our three-way relationship which negates the power each of us has over one another. But it wasn’t at work right then and no help to me at all.
Fortunately, my sister Geneva had been watching out for me, knowing Betty as she did and the way she had treated me in the past got her in her usual protective lioness mode. My sister has changed a lot in the last twelve months, including her taking sh!t from no one. Betty climbed off me as if nothing was going on, but Geneva had seen right through it as she entered my room. She told her she was getting Jane back right away and she would be thrown down the mountain without her skis. Betty stepped up to Geneva and sized her up, she’d always fancied her and teased me no end about how she liked to flirt with her. My sister is now more like me since her divorce with her cheating husband, she’d played the field on both sides. However, Betty to her was the forbidden fruit, just as much as Jane was off limits. My sister lives her wild side to full effect now she is free. She had even tracked down her ex-husband’s new lover and seduced her, just to get back at him. And, let him believe he was getting her back only to make him fall flat on his face. There was a side to my sister even I didn’t know. Geneva didn’t miss a beat and saw it all coming. She left the room with her cell-phone already dialing Jane.
The switch flipped again in Betty’s eyes as she turned her attention back to me, and I hit back with the only thing I could think of. I told her, Jane would not be happy with her and knew how much of bitch she was to me. She crumbled immediately and confessed to wanting to get a rise out of me. Teasing, she called it. I’m weak when it comes to saying no to Betty, she pushes my buttons in the right order and I both love and hate her, mostly at the same time. She can be a real bitch and yet the best company ever. Jane came back as quickly as I’d hoped and set the rules for Betty. Brad left to go and stay with some friends a few villages over. Betty had her face glued to her mobile whenever she was out of bed or not at the dinner table. She arrived two days before New Year’s Eve, (over a week late) and left on New Year’s Day to be with her new boyfriend, (just for show boyfriend more like). But she left us something, the question that had us all talking. She was the life and soul of our parties, and I missed her after she went.
What was the question we all talked about so much? You may take a different view on the subject and the issues and further questions it raised, but that is for you to decide.
So, here it is – What if 2020 was to usher in a decade of the modern equivalent to the Roaring Twenties, 1920’s, would you prefer to forego the next two years and go directly to the new era? The idea of new fun times, and after all we have been through these last ten years, with the recessions, and the downturn in our lives! At the end of every down, there is an up, I had my ups and downs with Betty for four-days, and she is certain 2020 will bring change. She travels the world and says people are sick of hearing bad news and are looking for more positives in their future. It can only go so far before people say enough is enough. The bad news treadmill we have all been on for so long has to change and a period of good must be due. Even after the Great Depression of the 1930’s someone had the good sense to advise the President to ask the Press to shift their focus from bad news to good. Surely we are owed the same? So, the real question is… and the one which had us all talking – would you give up the next two years of your life to be launched into a brand new Roaring Twenties? The new fun and exciting 2020, the all-new vision. Clear from the bad news blinkers we have been made to wear. Ask a friend or two over dinner one night.
